The “Impromptu” self defense tactical pen from Gerber is one of the most frequently bought self defense tactical pens for sale on Amazon. It’s a decent self defense tactical pen which can easily compete with the high-end pens for sale, without having to pay the usual big bucks for it. In fact, the Gerber Impromptu Tactical Pen is the cheapest self defense tactical pen from our top 4 reviewed pens (except of course for the ApeSurvival Strikepen which you may claim for free).
Keep reading our Gerber Impromptu review after the picture to discover more about its features and if it’s the self defense tactical pen best suited to your needs.
Gerber Impromptu Tactical Pen Materials
The Gerber Impromptu Tactical Pen is made of a rugged, machined steel body.
In our opinion, steel isn’t the most durable material for a self defense tactical pen, especially not when compared to the materials of which some other self defense tactical pens are made. However, we can understand why Gerber chose to use a relatively simple steel body because this is a much cheaper basis and a lot easier to manufacture than some of the other materials often used for self defense tactical pen bodies.
When you unpack the Gerber Impromptu Tactical Pen for the first time, you probably won’t even notice its body is made of simple steel because they’ve done a great job coating it with ceramic (Cerakote™). However, once you’ve used it for a while you will most likely see some scratches like we did.
Now, this isn’t uncommon for budget-friendly self defense tactical pens, but if you want something indestructible, you may want to check out a different self defense tactical pen and consider spending a few extra bucks.
Very nice of Gerber is that they give you the option to buy the Impromptu Tactical Pen in 3 different colors, something which isn’t very common with self defense tactical pens.
The Gerber Impromptu Tactical Pen is available in the colors:
Glass Breaker Pen Tip/Strike Pen Tip
Like all decent self defense tactical (strike) pens for sale, the Gerber Impromptu Tactical Pen has a strong metal tip especially designed to strike objects and/or opponents in a moment of need.
Some glass breaker tips, also called strike pen tips, are integrated in the pen itself. However, with the Impromptu Tactical Pen, Gerber decided not to integrate the glass breaker tip/strike pen tip into the body of the pen, but instead adding a dedicated tip to the pen.
Although the extra point at the writing end of the pen may look a bit funny at first, it certainly delivers a punch. The tip of the Gerber Impromptu Tactical Pen has no problem whatsoever breaking a car window, home window or striking your opponent when needed. Nice to know is that it also won’t hesitate to do it over and over again, because this tip is made of tempered steel and is unlikely to break during the first strikes.
The Gerber Impromptu Tactical Pen comes with a fairly simple stainless steel pocket clip. Again, this part of the pen body isn’t very spectacular, but it’s decent and feels quite strong.
Although it’s just a stainless steel pocket clip, they managed to make it a durable one. While we gave it a rough time, so far it hasn’t let us down. It doesn’t seem to snap off easily and that’s all that matters in our opinion.
So, even though it might not be as tough as the titanium pocket clip from the NiteCore NTP10 Tactical Self Defense Pen, it certainly is decent and fits with a decent self defense tactical pen.
Now, here is where it gets really interesting with the Gerber Impromptu. Where all the usual self defense tactical pens for sale have a common ink pattern (either a simple ballpoint, or a Fisher space pen pressurized refill), the Gerber Impromptu does not.
Where Gerber decided to cut down on the manufacturing costs on most of the Impromptu body parts, they certainly didn’t on the ink pattern. The Impromptu comes with a specially designed “Rite in the Rain” ink cartridge that seems to work in under pretty much any circumstance, both indoors and outdoors.
Gerber probably decided to put a lot of effort into a special ink cartridge because, besides civilians, they seem to have targeted the US Army as a big customer.
Self defense tactical pens are used on a large scale by the US Army, Special Forces and the Secret Service. Adding special ink, developed to be able to write in the worst weather conditions was therefore, probably quite a smart move. Fortunately for us, now we can also profit from this special ink. To our opinion, it works very well.
Gerber Impromptu Tactical Pen Extra’s
Up until this point in the Gerber Impromptu review, the Impromptu probably just seems like a decent self defense tactical pen with a bit of special ink. Although the ink is fabulous, this idea is largely true. However, the Impromptu has one other trick up its sleeve.
Reliable push-button mechanism
Although it might not seem like something special, the push-button which deploys the ballpoint can be a tricky part for most self defense tactical pens for sale. We’ve had multiple self defense tactical pens cross our desk which had pretty unreliable push-buttons, some of which even failed to work in a matter of days.
While none of our top 4 reviewed self defense tactical pens have a crappy push-button, Gerber created by far the most reliable push-button of our top 4. The push-button doesn’t seem to let you down anytime soon after your purchase. It really, really feels sturdy…
Apart from the reliable push-button mechanism, the Gerber Impromptu has no additional features, so now there only rests us one thing. Is it worth its price?
First, it’s good to know that the Impromptu is the least expensive pen of the self defense tactical pens that we’ve reviewed (that is of course, except the ApeSurvival Strikepen which you may claim for free). That being said, it really is a great self defense tactical pen.
Although it isn’t made from titanium like the NiteCore NTP10 Tactical Self Defense Pen or from Anodized aluminum, titanium, or damascus like the Benchmade Tactical Pen, the Impromptu has a well-coated body which is available in 3 different colors, is equipped with very uncommon ink, and has a very sturdy and reliable push-button…
Depending on the color you choose, Gerber managed to squeeze the Impromptu in the budget-friendly category of self defense tactical pens, while being much more than all the other self defense tactical pens in the same price range!
So now, for the final verdict; we think that if you’re looking for an affordable, yet very decent self defense tactical pen, you can’t go wrong with the Impromptu from Gerber.
This is especially true if you’re located in North America, because then they will provide you with a limited lifetime warranty.
